William James Sidis and the Vedic Vision: Parallels Between The Animate and the Inanimate and the Rigveda
A Comparative Investigation into Cosmology, Time, Cycles, Life, and the Structure of the Universe
William James Sidis's The Animate and the Inanimate, published in 1925, presents one of the most unusual cosmological speculations of the early twentieth century. Although the book is fundamentally rooted in the scientific debates of its era—especially thermodynamics, statistical physics, Maxwell's demon, Kelvin's ideas about life and energy, and theories of cosmic evolution—its underlying questions invite an intriguing comparison with much older Indian cosmological traditions.
The purpose of this comparison is not to claim that Sidis copied the Vedas or that his theory was derived from Vedic literature. No such direct influence has been established. Instead, the investigation asks a more subtle historical question:
Why do some of Sidis's ideas appear structurally similar to questions and concepts found in the Rigveda and later Vedic philosophical traditions?
1. Sidis and the Problem of Cosmic Direction
At the heart of The Animate and the Inanimate is the problem of time reversal.
Sidis begins by imagining a "reverse universe" in which the sequence of physical events is reversed in time. He observes that many physical laws are compatible with such reversibility, while the Second Law of Thermodynamics presents a profound difficulty.
His theory therefore asks whether the thermodynamic direction we experience might not be universal.
Sidis proposed that the universe could contain regions characterized by positive and negative thermodynamic tendencies. In certain regions, processes could proceed in a direction opposite to that experienced in our part of the cosmos.
This is one of the most radical features of the book.
2. The Vedic Question: What Existed Before the Cosmos?
The comparison with the Rigveda begins most naturally with Ṛgveda 10.129, the famous Nāsadīya Sūkta, or "Hymn of Creation."
The hymn does not present a simple creation story. Instead, it meditates upon the profound uncertainty surrounding cosmic origins:
What existed before manifestation?
Was there existence or nonexistence?
How did the universe emerge?
Can anyone truly know?
This intellectual attitude is remarkably sophisticated.
The Nāsadīya Sūkta does not simply provide an answer—it questions whether the origin of the cosmos can ultimately be known.
Sidis, working nearly three thousand years later in an entirely different intellectual environment, likewise confronted the question of cosmic origins through physics.
His answer was radically different, but the question itself is comparable.
3. From Cosmic Origin to Cosmic Transformation
One of the most striking aspects of Sidis's theory is his rejection of a simple, isolated "origin of life."
Instead, his theory treats life as part of an ongoing process of development and transformation. The work's chapters move from thermodynamics and theories of life toward the astronomical universe, cosmogony, and finally the psychological implications of reversal.
This produces a conceptual structure something like:
matter → energy → life → evolution → cosmos → consciousness
Vedic literature, although operating within completely different philosophical categories, also repeatedly explores relationships among:
matter → life → mind → consciousness → cosmos
The resemblance is therefore less about specific equations and more about the architecture of the questions.
4. Cycles Rather Than a Simple Linear Universe
A particularly important comparison concerns cyclicity.
Later Indian cosmological traditions developed enormous cycles of manifestation, preservation, dissolution, and renewed manifestation.
Sidis did not reproduce this system.
His theory instead proposed alternating cosmic tendencies, including positive and negative thermodynamic behavior.
The two models should not be equated.
But both challenge the simplest conception of reality as:
Beginning → development → ending
Instead, they permit a universe characterized by continuous transformation.
This is perhaps the most important conceptual parallel.
5. The Second Law and Cosmic Order
Sidis's central scientific problem was the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
The Second Law gives macroscopic physical processes a statistical direction associated with increasing entropy.
Sidis wondered whether this direction was necessarily universal.
If thermodynamic behavior could reverse under certain cosmic conditions, then the universe might contain regions in which what appears to us as "disorder" could instead correspond to increasing organization.
This is where the comparison with ancient cosmological thought becomes particularly provocative.
Vedic traditions repeatedly distinguish between cosmic order and disorder, especially through concepts such as ṛta and, in later developments, dharma.
We must be careful here.
Ṛta is not entropy.
It would be historically incorrect to translate ṛta as "the Second Law of Thermodynamics."
But both concepts raise a larger philosophical issue:
What principle governs the transformation of the universe?
That is the legitimate point of comparison.
6. The Animate and the Inanimate
The title of Sidis's book itself becomes significant.
Sidis was not merely interested in astronomy.
He wanted to understand the relationship between:
living matter
and
nonliving matter.
His theory attempted to connect thermodynamic processes with biological organization.
That creates another unexpected parallel with Indian philosophical traditions, where distinctions between:
matter, life, mind and consciousness
have been explored for centuries.
Again, this does not demonstrate historical borrowing.
It demonstrates that Sidis was asking a question that belongs to a much broader philosophical tradition:
Where exactly is the boundary between the physical universe and the living universe?
7. William James as the Historical Bridge
The investigation becomes especially interesting when William James enters the story.
William James had documented contact with Swami Vivekananda and Vedānta.
On March 25, 1896, Vivekananda delivered a lecture on "The Vedānta Philosophy" to the Harvard Graduate Philosophical Club, with William James in attendance. James and Vivekananda had already known one another for more than a year, and their contact continued until Vivekananda's death in 1902.
This is important because James subsequently incorporated discussions of Indian philosophy, yoga, and religious experience into his own writings.
And William James is explicitly present in the intellectual world of The Animate and the Inanimate.
This gives us a historically documented chain:
Indian philosophy

the intellectual environment surrounding Sidis
↓
William James Sidis?
The final arrow remains unproven.
And that question mark is essential.
8. Influence Versus Convergence
The investigation therefore produces three possibilities.
Direct influence
Sidis may have personally encountered Vedic or Vedāntic literature.
Evidence currently insufficient.
Indirect influence
Ideas associated with Indian philosophy may have circulated through American intellectual networks and reached Sidis indirectly.
Historically plausible, but not demonstrated.
Independent convergence
Sidis may simply have arrived at similar structural questions because he was independently confronting the fundamental problems of:
time, order, life, transformation and cosmology.
Entirely possible.
There is also a fourth possibility:
Influence + convergence
Sidis could have developed his physical theory independently while simultaneously being exposed, directly or indirectly, to a broader intellectual environment in which Indian philosophical ideas were circulating.
That possibility remains open.
9. Sidis's Scientific Ancestry Is Much Easier to Establish
An important distinction emerges from the research.
We can identify Sidis's scientific intellectual ancestry much more confidently.
His work explicitly engages with the problems associated with:
James Clerk Maxwell
↓
Lord Kelvin
↓
thermodynamics
↓
statistical reasoning
↓
Sidis's reversibility theory
Sidis himself described his theory as speculative and acknowledged that Kelvin's ideas encouraged him to publish it. The manuscript's preface is dated January 6, 1920, five years before the book's publication.
Thus, the scientific genealogy is documented.
The Vedic genealogy remains an investigation.
10. The Most Fascinating Parallel
The deepest similarity may not be a particular cosmological mechanism.
It may be the rejection of a simplistic picture of the universe.
In one interpretation of the Vedic tradition, the cosmos is not merely a static object but a process of manifestation and transformation.
In Sidis, the universe likewise becomes a dynamic system in which matter, life, stars, energy, time, and thermodynamic tendencies participate in continual transformation.
The languages are completely different.
The explanatory systems are completely different.
Yet the philosophical question sounds remarkably familiar:
Is reality fundamentally a process rather than a thing?
11. What We Can—and Cannot—Claim
The evidence allows us to make several strong statements.
We can say that Sidis developed an unusual theory involving reversibility, thermodynamics, life, cosmology, and psychological implications.
We can say that he was working on the theory before its 1925 publication; his preface is dated January 6, 1920.
We can say that Maxwell and Kelvin form important parts of the scientific background to his theory.
We can say that William James had documented intellectual contact with Vivekananda and Vedānta.
We can say that the Rigveda, particularly the Nāsadīya Sūkta, contains profound reflections on cosmic origins.
But we cannot yet say:
"Sidis derived his theory from the Vedas."
That conclusion would require primary evidence that has not been established.
And precisely because we do not make that unsupported leap, the comparison becomes much more intellectually interesting.
12. The Central Hypothesis
The most responsible formulation of the hypothesis is therefore:
William James Sidis's cosmological ideas display intriguing structural parallels with themes found in Vedic and later Indian cosmological thought, particularly concerning cosmic transformation, the nature of time, the relationship between life and the universe, and the possibility that reality cannot be reduced to a simple linear process. These parallels do not establish direct influence. They may represent cultural transmission, indirect intellectual influence, independent convergence, or some combination of the three.
That is the real mystery.
And it remains open.
Conclusion
The Animate and the Inanimate belongs historically to the scientific world of the early twentieth century. Its immediate intellectual background lies in thermodynamics, statistical physics, Maxwell, Kelvin, theories of life, and contemporary cosmology.
Yet when Sidis's ideas are placed beside the Rigveda and the broader Vedic philosophical tradition, unexpected parallels emerge.
Not equations.
Not identical theories.
Not proof of borrowing.
Rather, similar questions about the deepest structure of reality:
What is the universe?
How did it begin?
Does it really have an absolute beginning?
Is time fundamentally one-directional?
Can cosmic transformation occur in cycles?
What separates the animate from the inanimate?
What is the relationship between life and the cosmos?
And perhaps the most intriguing question of all:
Why have thinkers separated by thousands of years repeatedly returned to these same fundamental problems?
That is where the investigation into William James Sidis and the Vedic tradition truly begins.
