# THE TRANSLATED VERSION OF THE BOOK OF ENOCH

## Canonical Manuscript Reconstruction

### Chapter 1

 1. The words of the blessing of Enoch, wherewith he blessed the elect and righteous, who must exist in the times of tribulation, rejecting all wickedness and godlessness. Enoch, a righteous man who walked with God, answered and spake when his eyes were opened, and whilst he beheld a holy vision of the heavens. This the angels showed unto me.

 2. From them I heard all things, and I understood that which I saw; things which shall not come to pass in this generation, but in a generation yet to come in a distant time, for the sake of the elect.

 3. Concerning them I spake and conversed with Him, who shall come forth from His habitation, the Holy and Mighty One, the God of the world:

 4. Who shall tread upon Mount Sinai; He shall appear with His hosts and manifest Himself in the strength of His heavenly power.

 5. All shall be smitten with fear, and the Watchers shall be terrified.

 6. Great fear and trembling shall seize them, even unto the uttermost parts of the earth. The heights of the mountains shall be shaken, and the high hills shall be cast down, melting like honeycomb in the midst of a flaming fire. The earth shall be submerged, and all things that dwell therein shall perish; whilst judgment shall come upon all, even upon all the righteous:

 7. But unto them peace shall be granted: He shall preserve the elect, and toward them He shall exercise clemency.

 8. Then all shall belong unto God; they shall be joyful and blessed, and the splendor of the Godhead shall illuminate them.

### Chapter 2

 1. Behold, He cometh with ten thousands of His saints to execute judgment upon sinners, to destroy the ungodly, and to reprove all carnal things, and every sinful and worldly deed committed against Him. ^{(2)}

> ^{(2)} Quoted by Jude, vss. 14, 15.

### Chapter 3

 1. All they that dwell in the heavens know what transpireth there.

 2. They know that the heavenly luminaries alter not their paths; that each one riseth and setteth in order, each in its own season, without transgressing the commandments they received. They look down upon the earth and understand what must come to pass, from the beginning unto the end thereof.

 3. They behold how every work of God is unalterable in the period of its appearing. They see summer and winter, perceiving that the whole earth is filled with water; and that the cloud, the dew, and the rain refresh it.

### Chapter 4

 1. They consider and behold every tree, how they appear but to wither, and every leaf, but to fall; save for fourteen trees, which are not ephemeral but await the appearing of new leaves for two or three winters.

### Chapter 5

 1. Again they consider the days of summer, wherein the sun is over the earth from the beginning; whilst thou seekest a covering and a shaded place because of the burning sun; whilst the earth is parched with fervent heat, and thou art unable to walk upon the ground or upon the rocks by reason of the heat.

### Chapter 6

 1. They consider how the trees, when they put forth their green leaves, cover themselves and bear fruit; understanding all things and knowing that He, who liveth forever, doeth all these things for your sake:

 2. That the works from the beginning of every existing year—yea, all His works—are obedient unto Him and invariable; even as God hath decreed, so do all things come to pass.

 3. They see also how the seas and the rivers together accomplish their respective operations:

 4. But thou endurest impatiently; thou fulfillest not the commandments of the Lord, but transgressest and slanderest His greatness; and cursed are the words in thy polluted mouth against His majesty.

 5. Thou, withered of heart, peace shall not be with thee!

 6. Therefore your days shall curse you, and the years of your life shall perish; perpetual execration shall be multiplied, and ye shall obtain no mercy.

 7. In those days ye shall resign your peace to the eternal curse of all the righteous, and sinners shall perpetually execrate you;

 8. They shall execrate you with all that is ungodly.

 9. The elect shall possess light, joy, and peace; and they shall inherit the earth.

 10. But thou, who art unholy, shalt be accursed.

 11. Then wisdom shall be given unto the elect, all who shall live and not transgress through ungodliness or pride, but shall humble themselves, possessing prudence, and shall not repeat their transgression.

 12. They shall not condemn the entire period of their lives, nor shall they die in torment and indignation; but the sum of their days shall be fulfilled, and they shall grow old in peace; whilst the years of their happiness shall be multiplied in joy and with peace, forever, throughout the whole duration of their existence.

### Chapter 7

 1. And it came to pass, after the sons of men had multiplied in those days, that elegant and beautiful daughters were born unto them.

 2. And when the angels, ^{(3)} the sons of heaven, beheld them, they became enamored of them, saying one to another: "Come, let us select for ourselves wives from the progeny of men, and let us beget children."

> ^{(3)} In the Aramaic text, it reads "Watchers" (J.T. Milik, *Aramaic Fragments of Qumran Cave 4* [Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1976], p. 167).

 3. Then their leader, Samyaza, said unto them: "I fear lest ye should perhaps be unwilling to accomplish this undertaking;

 4. And that I alone shall suffer for so grievous a crime."

 5. But they answered him and said: "We all swear;

 6. (And bound themselves by mutual oaths), that we will not alter our intent, but will execute our projected undertaking."

 7. Then swore they all together, and all bound themselves by mutual oath. Their whole number was two hundred, who descended in the days of Ardis, ^{(4)} which is the summit of Mount Armon.

> ^{(4)} From Ardis. Or, "in the days of Jared" (R.H. Charles, ed. and trans., *The Book of Enoch* [Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1893], p. 63).

 8. That mountain, therefore, was called Armon, because they had sworn upon it ^{(5)} and bound themselves by mutual oath.

> ^{(5)} Mt. Armon, or Mount Hermon, derives its name from the Hebrew *herem*, a curse (Charles, p. 63).

 9. These are the names of their chiefs: Samyaza, who was their leader, Urakabarameel, Akibeel, Tamiel, Ramuel, Danel, Azkeel, Saraknyal, Asael, Armers, Batraal, Anane, Zavebe, Samsaveel, Ertael, Turel, Yomyael, Arazyal. These were the prefects of the two hundred angels, and the rest were all with them. ^{(6)}

> ^{(6)} The Aramaic text preserves an earlier list of the names of these Guardians or Watchers: Semihazah; Artqoph; Ramtel; Kokabel; Ramel; Danieal; Zeqiel; Baraqel; Asael; Hermoni; Matarel; Ananel; Stawel; Samsiel; Sahriel; Tummiel; Turiel; Yomiel; Yhaddiel (Milik, p. 151).

 10. Then they took wives, each choosing for himself; whom they began to approach, and with whom they cohabited, teaching them sorcery, incantations, and the dividing of roots and trees.

 11. And the women conceived and bare giants ^{(7)}.

> ^{(7)} The Greek text varies considerably from the Ethiopic here. A Greek manuscript adds to this section: "And they [the women] bare to them [the Watchers] three races: the great giants. The giants brought forth [some say 'slew'] the Naphelim, and the Naphelim brought forth [or 'slew'] the Elioud. And they survived, increasing in power according to their greatness." See the account in the Book of Jubilees.

 12. Whose stature was three hundred cubits. These devoured all that the labor of men produced, until it became impossible to feed them;

 13. Whereupon they turned against men, in order to devour them;

 14. And they began to injure birds, beasts, reptiles, and fish, to eat their flesh, one after another, ^{(8)} and to drink their blood.

> ^{(8)} Their flesh, one after another. Or, "of another flesh." R.H. Charles notes that this phrase may refer to the destruction of one class of giants by another (Charles, p. 65).

 15. Then the earth reproved the unrighteous.

### Chapter 8

 1. Moreover, Azazyel taught men to make swords, knives, shields, breastplates, the fabrication of mirrors, the manufacture of bracelets and ornaments, the use of paint, the beautifying of eyebrows, the use of every select type of precious stones, and all sorts of dyes, so that the world was altered.

 2. Impiety was increased, fornication multiplied; and they transgressed and corrupted all their ways.

 3. Amazarak taught all sorceries and the dividers of roots:

 4. Armers taught the solution of sorceries;

 5. Barkayal taught the observers of the stars ^{(9)};

> ^{(9)} Observers of the stars. Astrologers (Charles, p. 67).

 6. Akibeel taught signs;

 7. Tamiel taught astronomy;

 8. And Asaradel taught the motion of the moon.

 9. And men, being destroyed, cried out, and their voices breached the heavens.

### Chapter 9

 1. Then Michael and Gabriel, Radael, Suryal, and Uriel looked down from heaven and saw the quantity of blood that was shed upon the earth, and all the iniquity that was practiced upon it, and said one to another: "This is the voice of their cries;

 2. The earth, despoiled of her children, hath cried out, even unto the gates of heaven."

 3. "And now unto thee, O Holy One of heaven, the souls of men complain, saying: 'Obtain justice for us with the Most High'" ^{(10)}. Then they said unto their Lord, the King: "Thou art Lord of lords, God of gods, King of kings. The throne of Thy glory is forever and ever, and forever be Thy name sanctified and glorified.

> ^{(10)} Obtain justice for us. Literally, "Bring judgment to us from the..." (Richard Laurence, ed. and trans., *The Book of Enoch the Prophet* [London: Kegan Paul, Trench & Co., 1883], p. 9).

 4. Thou hast made all things; Thou possessest power over all things; and all things are open and manifest before Thee. Thou seest all things, and nothing can hide itself from Thee.

 5. Thou hast seen what Azazyel hath done, how he hath taught every kind of iniquity upon the earth, and hath opened to the world all the secret things which are done in the heavens.

 6. Samyaza also hath taught sorceries, unto whom Thou gavest authority over those who are associated with Thee. They have gone together unto the daughters of men, have lain with them, and have contaminated themselves;

 7. And have discovered crimes unto them. ^{(11)}

> ^{(11)} Discovered crimes. Or, "revealed these signs" (Charles, p. 70).

 8. The women likewise have borne giants.

 9. Thus the whole earth hath been filled with blood and iniquity.

 10. And now, behold, the souls of those who are dead cry out.

 11. And they complain even unto the gate of heaven.

 12. Their groans ascend; nor can they escape from the injustice which is committed upon the earth. Thou knowest all things before they exist.

 13. Thou knowest these things and what hath been done by them; yet Thou speakest not unto us.

 14. What, by reason of these things, ought we to do against them?

### Chapter 10

 1. Then the Most High, the Great and Holy One spake,

 2. And sent Arsayalalyur ^{(12)} unto the son of Lamech,

> ^{(12)} Arsayalalyur. In the Greek text, it reads "Uriel."

 3. Saying: "Say unto him in My name: Hide thyself."

 4. Then He explained to him the consummation which is about to take place; for the whole earth shall perish; the waters of a deluge shall come upon all the earth, and all they that are therein shall be destroyed.

 5. And now, teach him how he may escape, and how his seed may remain throughout all the earth.

 6. Again the Lord said unto Raphael: "Bind Azazyel, hands and feet; cast him into darkness; and opening the desert which is in Dudael, cast him therein.

 7. Hurl upon him sharp stones, covering him with darkness;

 8. There he shall remain forever; cover his face, that he may not see the light.

 9. And in the great day of judgment, cast him into the fire.

 10. Restore the earth, which the angels have corrupted; and announce life unto it, that I may receive it.

 11. All the sons of men, even their offspring, shall not perish in consequence of every secret whereby the Watchers have destroyed, and what they taught;

 12. The whole earth hath become corrupted by the effects of the teachings of Azazyel. To him, therefore, attribute every crime."

 13. Unto Gabriel also the Lord said: "Go unto the bastards, ^{(13)} to the reprobates, to the children of fornication; and destroy the children of fornication, the offspring of the Watchers from among men; bring them forth and excite them one against another. Cause them to perish by mutual slaughter; for length of days shall not be theirs.

> ^{(13)} "bastards" (Charles, p. 73; Michael A. Knibb, ed. and trans., *The Ethiopic Book of Enoch* [Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1978], p. 88).

 14. They shall entreat thee, but their fathers shall not obtain their desires with respect to them; for they hoped for eternal life, and that they might live, each one of them, five hundred years."

 15. Unto Michael likewise the Lord said: "Go and announce their own crimes unto Samyaza, and to the others who are with him, who have associated themselves with women to contaminate themselves with all their impurity. And when all their children shall be slain, when they shall behold the perdition of their beloved ones, bind them for seventy generations under the earth, even until the day of judgment and of consummation, until the judgment, whose effect endureth forever, be completed.

 16. Then shall they be led away into the lowest depths of the fire in torments; there shall they be shut up in confinement forever.

 17. Immediately after this, he, ^{(14)} together with the others, shall burn and perish; they shall be bound until the consummation of many generations.

> ^{(14)} He. I.e., Samyaza.

 18. Destroy all souls addicted to lust, ^{(15)} and the offspring of the Watchers, for they tyrannize over mankind.

> ^{(15)} "lust" (Knibb, p. 90; cp. Charles, p. 76).

 19. Let every oppressor perish from the face of the earth;

 20. Let every evil work be destroyed;

 21. Let the seed of justice and righteousness appear, and that which is productive become a blessing.

 22. Justice and righteousness shall be planted forever with delight.

 23. And then all the saints shall give thanks, and shall live until they have begotten thousands of children, while the entire period of their youth and their sabbaths shall be completed in peace. In those days the whole earth shall be cultivated in righteousness; it shall be wholly planted with trees and shall be full of blessings; every tree of delight shall be planted therein.

 24. Vineyards shall be planted; and the vineyard which shall be planted therein shall yield fruit unto satiety; every seed which shall be sown therein shall produce a thousand for one measure; and a measure of olives shall produce ten presses of oil.

 25. Purify the earth from all oppression, from all injustice, from all crime, from all impiety, and from all impurity which is committed upon it. Exterminate them from the earth.

 26. Then all the sons of men shall be righteous, and all nations shall pay Me divine honors and shall bless Me; and all shall worship Me.

 27. The earth shall be cleansed from all corruption, from all punishment, and from all suffering; I will not send a deluge upon it again, from generation to generation, forever.

 28. In those days I will open treasures of blessings which are in the heavens, that I may cause them to descend upon the earth and upon all the works and labors of man.

 29. Peace and equity shall associate with the sons of men all the days of the world, in each of their generations.

   *(Chapter 11 - Missing from the original manuscript)*

### Chapter 12

 1. Before all these things came to pass, Enoch was hidden; and none of the sons of men knew where he was, where he had been, and what had occurred.

 2. He was wholly engaged with the saints and with the Watchers in his days.

 3. I, Enoch, was blessed by the great Lord and King of peace.

 4. And behold, the Watchers called me Enoch, the scribe.

 5. Then the Lord said unto me: "Enoch, scribe of righteousness, go and say unto the Watchers of heaven, who have deserted the high heaven and their holy, eternal state, who have been defiled with women,

 6. And have done as the sons of men do, taking to themselves wives, and who have been greatly corrupted upon earth;

 7. That upon earth they shall never obtain peace and remission of sins. For they shall not rejoice in their offspring; they shall see the slaughter of their beloved ones; they shall lament the destruction of their children and shall make petition forever; but they shall not obtain mercy and peace."

### Chapter 13

 1. Then Enoch, passing by, said unto Azazyel: "Thou shalt not obtain peace. A great sentence is against thee. He shall bind thee;

 2. Help, mercy, and supplication shall not be with thee because of the oppression thou hast taught;

 3. And because of every act of blasphemy, tyranny, and sin which thou hast discovered to the sons of men."

 4. Then, departing from him, I spake to them all together;

 5. And they were all terrified and trembled;

 6. Beseeching me to write for them a memorial of supplication, that they might obtain forgiveness; and that I should make a memorial of their prayers ascending before the God of heaven; because they themselves from thenceforth could not address Him, nor lift up their eyes to the heavens by reason of the infamous offense wherewith they were judged.

 7. Then I wrote a memorial of their prayers and supplications, for their spirits, for all that they had done, and for the subject of their request, that they might obtain remission and rest.

 8. Proceeding therein, I continued over the waters of Danbadan, ^{(16)} which are from the right to the west of Armon, reading the memorial of their prayers, until I fell asleep.

> ^{(16)} Danbadan. Dan in Dan (Knibb, p. 94).

 9. And behold, a dream came unto me, and visions appeared above me. And I fell down and saw a vision of punishments, that I might relate it to the sons of heaven and reprove them. When I awoke, I went unto them. They were all assembled weeping in Oubelseyael, which is situated between Lebanon and Seneser, ^{(17)} with their faces hidden.

> ^{(17)} Libanos and Seneser. Lebanon and Senir (near Damascus).

 10. And I related in their presence all the visions which I had seen and my dream;

 11. And began to announce these words of righteousness, reproving the Watchers of heaven.

### Chapter 14

 1. This is the book of the words of righteousness, and of the reproof of the Watchers, who belong to the world, ^{(18)} according to that which He, who is holy and great, commanded in the vision. I perceived in my dream that I was then speaking with the tongue of flesh and with my breath, which the Mighty One hath placed in the mouth of men, that they might converse with Him.

> ^{(18)} Who belong to the world. Or, "who (are) from eternity" (Knibb, p. 95).

 2. I understood with the heart. Even as He had created and given to men the power to comprehend the word of understanding, so He created and gave to me the power to reprove the Watchers, the generation of the heavens. And I wrote their petition; and in my vision it was shown unto me that their request shall not be granted unto them while the world endureth.

 3. Judgment hath passed upon you: your request shall not be granted unto you.

 4. From henceforth, ye shall never ascend into heaven; He hath said that upon earth He shall bind you, as long as the world exists.

 5. But before these things, thou shalt see the destruction of your beloved sons; ye shall not possess them, but they shall fall before you by the sword.

 6. Neither shall ye ask for them, nor for yourselves;

 7. But ye shall weep and supplicate in silence the words of the book which I have written. ^{(19)}

> ^{(19)} But ye shall weep… I have written. Or, "Likewise, despite your tears and prayers, ye shall receive nothing of all that is contained in the records which I have written" (Charles, p. 80).

 8. A vision then appeared unto me.

 9. Behold, in that vision clouds and mist invited me; agitated stars and the glare of lightnings impelled me and pressed me forward, whilst winds in the vision assisted my flight, accelerating my progress.

 10. They elevated me high into heaven. I proceeded until I came near unto a wall built with stones of crystal. A vibrating tongue of fire ^{(20)} surrounded it, which began to strike me with terror.

> ^{(20)} Vibrating tongue of fire. Literally, "a tongue of fire."

 11. Into this vibrating tongue of fire I entered;

 12. And I approached a spacious habitation, also built with stones of crystal. Its walls also, as well as the pavement, were formed with stones of crystal, and of crystal also was the floor. Its roof had the appearance of agitated stars and the glares of lightnings; and between them were fiery cherubim in a stormy sky. ^{(21)} A flame burned around the walls; and its portal burned with fire. When I entered into this habitation, it was hot as fire and cold as ice. No trace of delight or of life was there. Terror overwhelmed me, and a tremor of fear seized upon me.

> ^{(21)} In a stormy sky. Literally, "and its heaven was water" (Charles, p. 81).

 13. Violently agitated and trembling, I fell upon my face. In the vision I looked.

 14. And I saw that there was another habitation, more spacious than the first, every entrance whereof was open before me, elevated in the midst of the vibrating flame.

 15. So greatly did it excel in all points, in glory, in magnificence, in magnitude, that it is impossible to describe to you the splendor or the extent thereof.

 16. Its floors were of fire, above were lightnings and agitated stars, while the roof exhibited a burning fire.

 17. I examined it attentively and saw that it contained an exalted throne;

 18. The appearance whereof was like unto frost, while its circumference resembled the orbit of the brilliant sun; and there was the voice of a cherub.

 19. From underneath this mighty throne flowed rivers of flaming fire.

 20. To look upon it was impossible.

 21. One great in glory sat upon it,

 22. Whose robe was more brilliant than the sun and whiter than snow.

 23. No angel was able to penetrate to look upon His face, the Glorious and Effulgent; nor could any mortal behold Him. A flaming fire surrounded Him.

 24. Also a fire of great extent continued to rise up before Him; so that none of those who were round about Him were able to approach Him, among the myriads of myriads ^{(22)} that stood before Him. To Him holy counsel was unnecessary. Yet the Sanctified, who were near Him, departed not from Him neither by night nor by day; nor were they taken away from before Him. I also was so far advanced, with a veil over my face, and trembling. Then the Lord with His own mouth called me, saying: "Approach hither, Enoch, to My holy word."

> ^{(22)} Myriads of myriads. Ten thousand times ten thousand (Knibb, p. 99).

 25. And He raised me up, making me approach even unto the entrance. My eyes were directed toward the ground.

### Chapter 15

 1. Then, addressing Himself to me, He spake and said: "Hear, fear not, righteous Enoch, thou scribe of righteousness: approach hither and hear My voice. Go, say unto the Watchers of heaven, to whom I sent thee to pray for them; thou oughtest to pray for men, and not men for thee.

 2. Wherefore have ye abandoned the sublime and holy heaven, which remaineth forever; ye have lain with women; ye have corrupted yourselves with the daughters of men; ye have taken to yourselves wives; ye have acted like the sons of earth and have begotten an impious offspring. ^{(23)}

> ^{(23)} An impious offspring. Literally, "giants" (Charles, p. 82; Knibb, p. 101).

 3. Ye are spiritual, holy, and possessors of a life which is eternal; ye have contaminated yourselves with women, ye have procreated in carnal blood; ye have lusted after the blood of men; and have done as they who are flesh and blood do.

 4. These, however, die and perish.

 5. Therefore, from henceforth I give them wives, that they may cohabit with them; that children may be born of them; and that this may be transacted upon the earth.

 6. But from the beginning ye were made spiritual, possessing a life which is eternal and not subject to death forever.

 7. Therefore, I made not wives for you, because, being spiritual, your habitation is in heaven.

 8. Now, the giants who have been born of spirit and of flesh shall be called upon earth evil spirits, and upon earth shall be their habitation. Evil spirits shall proceed from their flesh, because they were created from above; from the holy Watchers was their beginning and their first foundation. Evil spirits they shall be upon earth, and spirits of wickedness they shall be called. The habitation of the spirits of heaven shall be in heaven, but upon earth shall be the habitation of the terrestrial spirits, who are born upon the earth. ^{(24)}

> ^{(24)} Note the many implications of verses 3-8 with respect to the progeny of evil spirits.

 9. The spirits of the giants shall be like unto clouds, ^{(25)} which oppress, corrupt, fall, contend, and confound upon the earth.

> ^{(25)} The Greek word for "cloud" here, *nephelas*, may conceal the older reading, *Napheleim* (Nephilim).

 10. They shall cause lamentation. No food shall they eat; and they shall thirst; they shall hide themselves and shall not rise ^{(26)} against the sons of men, and against women; for they shall come during the days of slaughter and destruction.

> ^{(26)} Not. Almost all manuscripts contain this negative, but Charles, Knibb, and others believe that "not" should be deleted so that the phrase reads "shall rise."

### Chapter 16

 1. And as to the death of the giants, wheresoever their spirits depart from their bodies; let their flesh, which is perishable, be without judgment. ^{(27)} Thus they shall perish until the day of the great consummation of the world. A destruction of the Watchers and of the ungodly shall take place.

> ^{(27)} Let their flesh… be without judgment. Or, "their flesh shall be destroyed before the judgment" (Knibb, p. 102).

 2. And then to the Watchers, to whom I sent thee to pray for them, who in the beginning were in heaven,

 3. Say: In heaven ye have been; secret things, however, have not been manifested unto you; yet ye have known a reprovable mystery.

 4. And this ye have related to women in the hardness of your heart, and by that mystery women and mankind have multiplied evils upon the earth.

 5. Say unto them: Never, therefore, shall ye obtain peace.

### Chapter 17

 1. They elevated me to a certain place where there was ^{(28)} the appearance of a burning fire; and when they pleased, they assumed the likeness of men.

> ^{(28)} Where there was. Or, "where they [the angels] were like" (Knibb, p. 103).

 2. They carried me to a high place, to a mountain whose summit reached heaven.

 3. And I saw the receptacles of light and of thunder at the extremities of the place, where it was deep. There was a bow of fire and arrows in their vibration, a sword of fire and every kind of lightning.

 4. Then they led me to a murmuring stream ^{(29)} and to a fire in the west, which received every sunset. I came to a river of fire, which flowed like water and emptied into the great sea toward the west.

> ^{(29)} To a murmuring stream. Literally, "to the water of life, which speaketh" (Laurence, p. 23).

 5. I saw every broad river until I came to the great darkness. I went to where all flesh migrateth; and I saw the mountains of darkness, which constitute winter, and the place from whence floweth the water in every abyss.

 6. I saw also the mouths of all the rivers in the world and the mouths of the deeps.

### Chapter 18

 1. I then examined the receptacles of all the winds, perceiving that they contribute to adorn all creation and to preserve the foundation of the earth.

 2. I examined the stone which supporteth the corners of the earth.

 3. Also I saw the four winds, which sustain the earth and the firmament of heaven.

 4. And I saw the winds occupying the exalted heaven,

 5. Arising in the midst of heaven and earth, and constituting the pillars of heaven.

 6. I saw the winds that turn in heaven, which occasion and determine the orbit of the sun and of all the stars; and upon the earth I saw the winds that maintain the clouds.

 7. I saw the path of the angels.

 8. I perceived at the extremity of the earth the firmament of heaven above it. Then I passed toward the south,

 9. Where burn, both by day and by night, six mountains formed of glorious stones: three toward the east and three toward the south.

 10. Those which were toward the east were of multicolored stone, one of which was of pearl, and another of antimony. Those toward the south were of a red stone. The middle one approached heaven like the throne of God; a throne composed of alabaster, the top whereof was of sapphire. I saw also a flaming fire suspended over all the mountains.

 11. And there I saw a place on the other side of an extended territory where waters were collected.

 12. Also I saw terrestrial fountains, deep in burning columns of heaven.

 13. And in the columns of heaven I saw fires which descended without number, but neither in the high nor in the deep. Over these fountains also I perceived a place where there was neither the firmament of heaven above it, nor the solid ground beneath it; neither was there water above, nor anything in the wind; but the place was desolate.

 14. And there I saw seven stars, like unto great mountains, and like spirits supplicating me.

 15. Then the angel said: "This place, until the consummation of heaven and earth, shall be the prison of the stars and of the hosts of heaven.

 16. The stars that roll over the fire are those which transgressed the commandment of God before their time came; for they came not in their own season. Therefore, He was offended with them and bound them until the period of the consummation of their crimes in the secret year."

### Chapter 19

 1. Then Uriel said: "Behold here the angels who cohabited with women, chose their leaders;

 2. And being numerous in appearance, ^{(30)} profaned men and caused them to err; thus they sacrificed to demons as to gods. For in the great day there shall be a judgment wherein they shall be judged until they are consumed; and their wives also shall be judged, who led astray the angels of heaven to greet them."

> ^{(30)} Being numerous in appearance. Or, "assuming many forms" (Knibb, p. 106).

 3. And I, Enoch, alone saw the appearance of the end of all things. No man having seen what I saw.

### Chapter 20

 1. These are the names of the Watcher angels:

 2. Uriel, one of the holy angels, who presideth over clamor and terror.

 3. Raphael, one of the holy angels, who presideth over the spirits of men.

 4. Raguel, one of the holy angels, who inflicteth punishment upon the world and the luminaries.

 5. Michael, one of the holy angels, who, presiding over human virtue, commandeth their actions.

 6. Sarakiel, one of the holy angels, who presideth over the spirits of the children of men who transgress.

 7. Gabriel, one of the holy angels, who presideth over Ikisat, ^{(31)} over paradise and over the cherubim.

> ^{(31)} Ikisat. The serpents (Charles, p. 92; Knibb, p. 107).

### Chapter 21

 1. Then I made a circuit to a place in which nothing was complete.

 2. And there I saw neither the tremendous fabrications of an exalted heaven, nor of an established earth, but a desolate place, prepared and terrible.

 3. There also I saw seven stars of heaven bound together, like unto great mountains, and like unto burning fire. I exclaimed: "For what kind of crime are they bound, and why are they removed from their place?" Then Uriel, one of the holy angels who was with me and who conducted me, answered: "Enoch, why askest thou? Why reasonest thou with thyself and anxiously inquirest? These are those stars which transgressed the commandment of the Most High God; and they are here bound until the infinite number of the days of their crimes be complete."

 4. From thence I passed afterward to another terrible place;

 5. Where I saw the operation of a great fire, flaming and resplendent, in the midst whereof there was a division. Columns of fire struggling together unto the end of the abyss, and deep was their descent. But its measure and magnitude I was unable to discover, neither could I perceive its origin. Then I exclaimed: "How terrible is this place and how difficult to explore!"

 6. Uriel, one of the holy angels who was with me, answered and said: "Enoch, why art thou alarmed and marveled at this terrible place, at the sight of this place of suffering? This," said he, "is the prison of the angels; and here they shall be kept forever."

### Chapter 22

 1. From thence I directed my course to another place where I saw to the west a great and lofty mountain, a strong rock, and four delightful places.

 2. Internally it was deep, broad, and very smooth; as smooth as if it had been rolled over: it was deep and dark to the sight.

 3. Then Raphael, one of the holy angels who was with me, answered and said: "These are the delightful places where the spirits, the souls of the dead, shall be gathered; for them it was formed, and here shall be gathered all the souls of the children of men.

 4. These places in which they dwell they shall occupy until the day of judgment and until their appointed period.

 5. Their appointed period shall be long, even until the great judgment." And I saw the spirits of the children of men who are dead; and their voices breached heaven while they were accused.

 6. Then inquired I of Raphael, the angel who was with me, and said: "What spirit is that whose voice reacheth heaven and accuseth?"

 7. He answered, saying: "This is the spirit of Abel, who was slain by Cain, his brother; who shall accuse that brother until his seed be destroyed from the face of the earth;

 8. Until his seed disappear from the seed of the human race."

 9. At that time, therefore, I inquired respecting him and respecting the general judgment, saying: "Why is one separated from the other?" He answered: "Three separations have been made between the spirits of the dead, and thus the spirits of the righteous have been separated,

 10. Namely, by a chasm in the earth, by water, and by light above it.

 11. And in like manner sinners are separated when they die and are buried in the earth; judgment shall not overtake them in their lifetime.

 12. Here their souls are separated. Moreover, abundant is their suffering until the time of the great judgment, the punishment and torment of those who eternally execrated, whose souls are furnished and bound there forever.

 13. And thus hath it been since the beginning of the world. Thus, there exists a separation between the souls of those who utter complaints and of those who watch for their destruction, for their slaughter in the day of sinners.

 14. A receptacle of this type was formed for the souls of the unrighteous and of sinners; of those who committed crime and associated with the ungodly, whom they resemble. Their souls shall not be annihilated in that day of judgment, nor shall they rise from this place." Then I blessed God,

 15. And spake: "Blessed be my Lord, the Lord of glory and of righteousness, whose kingdom shall be forever and ever."

### Chapter 23

 1. From thence I went to another place toward the west, unto the extremities of the earth,

 2. Where I saw a resplendent fire running along without ceasing, with a course non-intermittent, neither by day nor by night; but always the same, continually.

 3. I inquired, saying: "What is this which never ceaseth?"

 4. Then Raguel, one of the holy angels who was with me, answered

 5. And said: "This flaming fire which thou seest running toward the west is that of all the luminaries of heaven."

### Chapter 24

 1. I went from thence to another place and saw a mountain of fire that resplendeth both by day and by night. I went toward it and perceived seven splendid mountains, which were different one from another.

 2. Their stones were brilliant and beautiful; all were brilliant and splendid to the sight, and comely was their surface. Three mountains were toward the east, consolidated and strengthened by being placed one upon another; three were toward the south, consolidated in a similar manner. Three were likewise deep valleys, which approached not one another. The seventh mountain was in the midst of them. In length they all resembled the seat of a throne, and odoriferous trees surrounded them.

 3. Among these there was a tree of an unceasing odor; nor of those which were in Eden was there any, of all the trees of fragrance, that smelled like this. Its leaves, its flowers never wither, and its fruit was beautiful.

 4. Its fruit resembled the cluster of the palm tree. I exclaimed: "Behold! This tree is comely of aspect, pleasant in its leaves, and the aspect of its fruits is delicious to the sight." Then Michael, one of the holy angels who was with me and one of those who preside over them, answered

 5. And said: "Enoch, why inquirest thou respecting the odor of this tree?

 6. Why art thou inquisitive to know it?"

 7. Then I, Enoch, answered him and said: "Concerning all things I am desirous of instruction, but particularly with respect to this tree."

 8. He answered me, saying: "The mountain which thou seest, the extension whereof resembles the seat of the Lord, shall be the seat whereon the Holy and Great Lord of glory, the eternal King, shall sit when He shall come and descend to visit the earth with goodness.

 9. And that tree of pleasant aroma, not of a carnal odor; there no one shall have power to touch it until the time of the great judgment. When all shall be punished and consumed forever, this shall be conferred upon the righteous and humble. The fruit of the tree shall be given to the elect. For toward the north, life shall be planted in the holy place, toward the habitation of the eternal King.

 10. Then shall they rejoice greatly and exult in the Holy One. The sweet odor shall enter into their bones; and they shall live a long life upon earth as did their forefathers; in their days there shall be no sorrow, distress, trouble, nor shall any punishment afflict them."

 11. And I blessed the Lord of glory, the eternal King, because He prepared this tree for the saints, formed it, and declared that He would give it unto them.

### Chapter 25

 1. From thence I went into the midst of the earth and saw a happy and fertile place, which contained branches continually spreading from the trees that were planted in it. There I saw a holy mountain, and beneath it, water from the back side flowed toward the south. I saw in the east another mountain as high as that one; and between them was a deep but not broad valley.

 2. Water ran toward the mountain to the west of it; and beneath it there was likewise another mountain.

 3. There was a valley, but not a broad valley, below; and in the midst of them was another deep and dry valley toward the extremity of the tree. All these valleys, which were deep but not oblique, consisted of a strong rock with the tree that was planted therein. And I marveled at the rock and the valley, being extremely surprised.

### Chapter 26

 1. Then I said: "What meaneth this blessed land, and all these lofty trees, and the accursed valley between them?"

 2. Then Uriel, one of the holy angels who was with me, answered: "This valley is the accursed of the accursed forever. Here shall be gathered all who have uttered with their mouths improper language against God and spoken harsh things of His glory. Here shall they be gathered. Here shall be their territory.

 3. In the latter days an example of judgment shall be made in righteousness before the saints, while those who received mercy shall, forever, all their days, bless God, the eternal God.

 4. And in the period of judgment they shall bless Him for His mercy, as He hath distributed it unto them." Then I blessed God, addressing Myself to Him and making mention, as was acknowledged, of His greatness.

### Chapter 27

 1. From thence I went toward the east into the midst of the mountain in the desert, whereof only the level of the surface I perceived.

 2. It was full of trees of the seed alluded to; and water gushed upon it.

 3. There appeared a cataract composed of many waterfalls directed both toward the east and toward the west. On one side there were trees; on the other, water and dew.

### Chapter 28

 1. Then I went to another place in the desert, toward the east of that mountain which I had approached.

 2. There I saw chosen trees, ^{(32)} particularly those which produce the sweet opiate smell, frankincense and myrrh; and trees different one from another.

> ^{(32)} Chosen trees. Literally "trees of judgment" (Laurence, p. 35; Knibb, p. 117).

 3. And over them was the elevation of the western mountain, at no great distance.

### Chapter 29

 1. Likewise I saw another place with valleys of water that never stop,

 2. Wherein I perceived a pleasant tree, which in odor resembles Zasakinon. ^{(33)}

> ^{(33)} Zasakinon. The mastic tree (Knibb, p. 118).

 3. Toward the valley I perceived the sweet-scented cinnamon. Over these I advanced toward the east.

### Chapter 30

 1. Then saw I another mountain containing trees from which water flowed like Neketro. ^{(34)} Their names were Sarira and Kalboneba. ^{(35)} And over this mountain I saw another mountain whereon there were trees of Alva. ^{(36)}

> ^{(34)} Neketro. Nectar (Knibb, p. 119).

> ^{(35)} Sarira and Kalboneba. Styrax and galbanum (Knibb, p. 119).

> ^{(36)} Alva. Aloes (Knibb, p. 119).

 2. These trees were full like almond trees, and strong; and when they produced fruit, they were superior to all fragrance.

### Chapter 31

 1. After these things, inspecting the entrances of the north above the mountains, I saw mountains and perceived seven mountains replete with pure nard, odoriferous trees, and papyrus.

 2. From thence I passed above the peaks of those mountains to some distance to the east, and went over the Erythraean Sea. ^{(37)} And when I had advanced far beyond it, I passed along above the angel Zateel and came to the garden of righteousness. In this garden I saw other trees, which were numerous and large, and flourished there.

> ^{(37)} Erythraean Sea. The Red Sea.

 3. Their fragrance was pleasant and powerful, and their appearance was both pleasant and elegant. The tree of knowledge also was there, whereof if anyone ate, he became endowed with great wisdom.

 4. It was similar to the species of the date palm, bearing fruit like extremely fine grapes, and its fragrance extended to a considerable distance. I exclaimed: "How beautiful is this tree, and how delightful is its appearance!"

 5. Next the holy Raphael, an angel who was with me, answered and said: "This is the tree of knowledge, whereof thy ancient father and thy mother ate, who were before thee, and who, obtaining knowledge, their eyes being opened and discovering that they were naked, were expelled from the garden."

### Chapter 32

 1. From thence I went toward the extremities of the earth, where I saw great beasts different one from another, and birds varied in their appearances and forms, as well as with notes of different sounds.

 2. To the right of these beasts I perceived the extremities of the earth where the heavens cease. The gates of heaven were open, and I saw the celestial stars coming forth. I enumerated them as they proceeded from the gate and wrote them all down as they came out one by one, according to their number. I wrote their names completely, their times and seasons, as the angel Uriel, who was with me, showed them unto me.

 3. He showed them all to me, and I wrote an account of them.

 4. He also wrote for me their names, their regulations, and their operations.

### Chapter 33

 1. From thence I advanced toward the north, to the extremities of the earth.

 2. And there I saw the great and glorious wonder at the extremities of the whole earth.

 3. I saw there celestial gates open to heaven, three of them distinctly separated. The winds of the north proceeded from them, blowing cold, hail, frost, snow, dew, and rain.

 4. From one of the gates they blew gently, but when they blew from the two other gates, it was violent and strong. They blew upon the earth heavily.

### Chapter 34

 1. From thence I went to the extremities of the world toward the west;

 2. There I perceived three gates open while I was looking in the north; the gates and passages through them were of equal magnitude.

### Chapter 35

 1. Then I proceeded to the extremities of the earth to the south, where I saw three gates open to the south, from whence came dew, rain, and wind.

 2. From thence I went to the extremities of the eastern heaven, where I saw three celestial gates open to the east, which had smaller gates within them. Through each of these smaller gates the stars of heaven passed, and passed toward the west by a path that was seen by them and the whole period of their appearing.

 3. When I saw them, I blessed them each time they appeared, and blessed the Lord of glory who had made these great and splendid signs, that they might show the magnificence of His works to the angels and to the souls of men, and that these might glorify all His works and operations, might see the effects of His power, might glorify the great labor of His hands and bless it forever.

   *(Chapter 36 - Missing from the original manuscript)*

### Chapter 37

 1. The vision which he saw, the second vision of wisdom which Enoch saw, the son of Jared, son of Mahalalel, the son of Cainan, son of Enos, son of Seth, son of Adam. This is the beginning of the word of wisdom, which I received to declare and say unto those who dwell upon the earth. Hear from the beginning and understand unto the end the holy things which I utter in the presence of the Lord of spirits. Those who were before us thought them good to utter;

 2. And we, who came after, obstruct the beginning of wisdom. Until the present time, it hath never happened that there was given before the Lord of spirits what I have received: wisdom according to the capacity of my intellect and according to the pleasure of the Lord of spirits; what I received from Him, a portion of eternal life.

 3. And I obtained three parables, which I declared to the inhabitants of the world.

### Chapter 38

 1. The first parable. When the congregation of the righteous shall be manifested and sinners shall be judged for their crimes and shall be afflicted in the sight of the world;

 2. When the righteous shall be manifested ^{(38)} in the presence of the same righteous, who shall be elect for their good works correctly weighed by the Lord of spirits, and when the light of the righteous and the elect who dwell on the earth shall be manifested; where shall be the habitation of sinners? And what shall be the resting place of those who rejected the Lord of spirits? It would have been better for them if they had never been born.

> ^{(38)} When the righteous shall be manifested. Or, "when the Righteous One shall appear" (Knibb, p. 125; cp. Charles, p. 112).

 3. When the secrets of the righteous also shall be revealed, then sinners shall be judged and the ungodly shall be afflicted in the presence of the righteous and elect.

 4. From that time, those who possess the earth shall cease to be powerful and exalted. Nor shall they be able to look upon the countenance of the holy, for the light of the countenances of the saints, of the righteous, and of the elect shall have been seen by the Lord of spirits. ^{(39)}

> ^{(39)} For the light… Lord of spirits. Or, "for the light of the Lord of spirits shall have appeared on the face of the holy, the righteous, and the chosen" (Knibb, p. 126).

 5. Then the powerful kings of that time shall be destroyed, but they shall be delivered into the hands of the upright and holy.

 6. Since then no one shall obtain compassion from the Lord of spirits, because their lives in this world shall have been completed.

### Chapter 39

 1. In those days, the elect and holy race shall descend from heaven and their seed shall be with the sons of men. Enoch received books of indignation and wrath, and books of haste and agitation.

 2. "Never shall they obtain mercy," saith the Lord of spirits.

 3. A cloud then caught me up, and the wind elevated me above the surface of the earth, placing me at the extremity of the heavens.

 4. There I saw another vision, and I saw the habitations and resting places of the saints. My eyes saw their habitations with the angels and their resting places with the saints. They were entering, supplicating, and praying for the sons of men; while righteousness flowed like water before them and mercy spread over the earth like dew. And thus it shall be toward them forever and ever.

 5. At that time my eyes saw the habitation of the elect, of truth, faith, and righteousness.

 6. Without number shall be the number of the saints and elect in the presence of God forever and ever.

 7. Their residence I saw under the wings of the Lord of spirits. All the saints and elect sang before Him, with an appearance like unto a flame of fire; their mouths were full of blessings and their lips glorified the name of the Lord of spirits. And righteousness incessantly dwelt before Him.

 8. I wished to remain there, and my soul desired that habitation. There was my antecedent inheritance, for in this manner I prevailed before the Lord of spirits.

 9. At this moment I glorified and exalted the name of the Lord of spirits with praise and exalting, for He hath established it with blessing and with exalting, according to His own good will.

 10. My eyes beheld that spacious place. I blessed it and spake: "Blessed be it, blessed from the beginning and forever." In the beginning, before the world was created, and without end is His knowledge.

 11. What is this world? Of every existing generation, they shall bless Him who sleepeth not spiritually, but remaineth before Thy glory, blessing, glorifying, exalting Thee and saying: "Holy, holy, the Lord of spirits hath filled the whole world with spirits."

 12. There my eyes saw all who, without sleeping, stand before Him and bless Him, saying: "Blessed be Thou, and blessed be the name of God forever and ever." Then my countenance was changed, until I became unable to continue seeing.

### Chapter 40

 1. After this I saw thousands of thousands and myriads of myriads, and an infinite number of people standing before the Lord of spirits.

 2. Likewise, on the four wings of the Lord of spirits, on the four sides, I perceived others beside those who stood before Him. Their names also I know, because the angel who was with me declared them unto me, revealing to me every secret thing.

 3. Then I heard the voices of those on the four sides magnifying the Lord of glory.

 4. The first voice blessed the Lord of spirits forever and ever.

 5. The second voice I heard blessing the Elect One and the elect who suffer for the cause of the Lord of spirits.

 6. The third voice I heard asking and praying on behalf of those who dwell upon earth and supplicate in the name of the Lord of spirits.

 7. The fourth voice I heard casting out the impious angels ^{(40)} and forbidding them to enter into the presence of the Lord of spirits to utter accusations against ^{(41)} the inhabitants of the earth.

> ^{(40) } Impious angels. Literally "the Satans" (Laurence, p. 45; Knibb, p. 128). *Ha-satan* in Hebrew ("the adversary") was originally the title of an office, not the name of an angel.

> ^{(41)} Utter accusations against. Or, "to accuse" (Charles, p. 119).

 8. After that I asked the angel of peace who proceeded with me to explain all that was hidden. I said unto him: "Who are those whom I had seen on the four sides, and what words were those which I had heard and written?" He answered: "The first is the merciful, the patient, the holy Michael.

 9. The second is he who presideth over all suffering and all affliction of the children of men: the holy Raphael. The third, who presideth over all that is powerful, is Gabriel. And the fourth, who presideth over repentance and the hope of those who shall inherit eternal life, is Phanuel. These are the four angels of the Most High God and their four voices, which at that moment I heard."

### Chapter 41

 1. After that I saw the secrets of heaven and of paradise, according to their divisions, and of human actions while they weighed them in balances. I saw the habitations of the elect and the habitations of the saints. And there my eyes saw all the sinners who had denied the Lord of glory and how they were expelled from thence and dragged out as they stood there; no punishment proceeded against them from the Lord of spirits.

 2. There also my eyes saw the secrets of lightning and thunder, and the secrets of the winds, how they are distributed when they blow upon the earth: the secrets of the winds, of the dew, and of the clouds. There I saw the place from whence they go forth and become saturated with the dust of the earth.

 3. There I saw the wooden receptacles in which the winds are separated, the receptacle of hail, the receptacle of snow, the receptacle of clouds and the cloud itself, which continued upon the earth before the creation of the world.

 4. I saw also the receptacles of the moon, from whence they come, whither they go, their glorious returns, and how one becomes more splendid than another. I marked their rich progress, their unchangeable progress, their divided and undiminished progress; their observance of a mutual fidelity by a stable oath; their proceeding before the sun and their adherence to the path distributed to them, ^{(42)} in obedience to the command of the Lord of spirits. Potent is His name forever and ever.

> ^{(42)} Their proceeding... path distributed. Or, "the sun goes first and completes its journey" (Knibb, p. 129; cp. Charles, p. 122).

 5. Afterward I saw the path of the moon, both hidden and manifest; and also the progress of that trajectory was completed day by day, and at night; while each one, together with the other, looked toward the Lord of spirits, magnifying Him and exalting Him without ceasing, since exalting Him, for them, is rest; for in the splendid sun there is a frequent alteration for blessing and for curse.

 6. The course of the path of the moon toward the upright is light, but to sinners it is darkness; in the name of the Lord of spirits, who created a division between light and darkness, separating the spirits of men, strengthening the spirits of the righteous in the name of their own righteousness.

 7. The angel preventeth not this, nor is he endowed with power to prevent it, for the Judge seeth all and judgeth them all in their very presence.

### Chapter 42

 1. Wisdom found not a place upon earth where she might dwell; her habitation, therefore, is in heaven.

 2. Wisdom went forth to dwell among the children of men, but she obtained no habitation. Wisdom returned to her place and sat down in the midst of the angels. But iniquity went forth after her return, which unwillingly found a habitation and resided among them like rain in the desert and like dew on the dry ground.

### Chapter 43

 1. I saw another splendor and the stars of heaven. I observed that He called them all by their respective names and that they heard. I saw that He weighed them in a just balance by their light and the breadth of their places, the day of their appearing, and their conversions. Splendor produced splendor; and their conversion was the number of the angels and of the faithful.

 2. Then I asked the angel who proceeded with me, and he explained to me secret things and what their names were. He answered: "The Lord of spirits hath shown unto thee a similarity of this. They are names of the righteous who dwelt on the earth, who believe in the name of the Lord of spirits forever and ever."

### Chapter 44

 1. Another thing also saw I with respect to splendor: that it riseth by reason of the stars and becometh splendor, being unable to forsake them.

### Chapter 45

 1. The second parable, concerning those who deny the name of the habitation of the saints and of the Lord of spirits.

 2. Into the heavens they shall not ascend, nor shall they come upon the earth. This shall be the portion of sinners who deny the name of the Lord of spirits and who are thus reserved for the day of punishment and affliction.

 3. In that day the Elect One shall sit upon a throne of glory and shall choose their conditions and their countless habitations, while their spirits within them shall be strengthened when they behold My Elect One, for those have fled for protection to My holy and glorious name.

 4. In that day I will cause My Elect One to dwell in the midst of them; I will change the face of heaven; I will bless it and illuminate it forever.

 5. I will also change the face of the earth, I will bless it and cause those whom I have elected to dwell upon it. But those who have committed sin and iniquity shall not dwell therein, for I have marked their proceedings. My righteous I will satisfy with peace, placing them before Me; but the condemnation of sinners shall approach, that I may destroy them from the face of the earth.

### Chapter 46

 1. There I saw the Ancient of Days, whose head was like white wool, and with him another, whose countenance resembled that of man. His countenance was full of grace, like unto that of the holy angels. Then I inquired of the angels who were with me and who showed me every secret thing concerning this Son of Man, who He was; from whence He was, and why He accompanied the Ancient of Days.

 2. He answered me and said: "This is the Son of Man, to whom righteousness belongeth, with whom righteousness hath dwelt, and who hath revealed all the treasures of that which is hidden: for the Lord of spirits hath chosen Him, and His portion hath exceeded all before the Lord of spirits in eternal ascension.

 3. This Son of Man whom thou seest shall raise up kings and powerful ones from their dwelling places, and the mighty from their thrones; He shall loose the reins of the powerful and break in pieces the teeth of sinners.

 4. He shall cast down kings from their thrones and from their dominions because they will not exalt Him, praise Him, nor humble themselves before Him, by whom their kingdoms were given unto them. Likewise the countenance of the powerful He shall cast down, filling them with confusion. Dark shall be their habitation and worms shall be their bed; from this their bed they expect not to rise again, because they exalt not the name of the Lord of spirits.

 5. They shall condemn the stars of heaven, they lift up their hands against the Most High, they walk and dwell upon earth, exhibiting all their acts of iniquity, even their works of iniquity. Their strength shall be in their riches and their faith in the goods which they have formed with their own hands. They shall deny the name of the Lord of spirits and shall expel Him from their temples wherein they assemble;

 6. And with Him the faithful, ^{(43)} who suffer in the name of the Lord of spirits.

> ^{(43)} Expel Him… the faithful. Or, "expel from the houses of their congregation and of the faithful" (Knibb, p. 132; cp. Charles, p. 131).

*(Continuation of the text without chapter marking in source)*

 1. In that day the prayer of the saints and of the righteous and the blood of the upright shall ascend from the earth into the presence of the Lord of spirits.

 2. In that day the saints shall assemble, who dwell in the heavens, and with united voices of petition, supplication, prayer, praise, and blessing to the name of the Lord of spirits, on account of the blood of the righteous which hath been shed, that the prayer of the righteous may not be discontinued before the Lord of spirits, that for them judgment may be executed, and that His patience may endure forever. ^{(44)}

> ^{(44)} That His patience… endure forever. Or, "(that) His patience may not have to last forever" (Knibb, p. 133).

 3. At that time I saw the Ancient of Days as he sat upon the throne of his glory, while the book of the living was opened in his presence and while all the powers that are above the heavens stand round about and before him.

 4. Then the hearts of the saints were filled with joy because the consummation of justice had arrived; the supplication of the saints was heard and the blood of the righteous appreciated by the Lord of spirits.

### Chapter 48

 1. In that place I saw a fountain of righteousness, which never faileth, encircled by many fountains of wisdom. Of them all the thirsty drank and were filled with wisdom, having their habitation with the upright, elect, and holy.

 2. In that hour the Son of Man was invoked before the Lord of spirits, and his name in the presence of the Ancient of Days.

 3. Before the sun and the signs were created, before the stars of heaven had been formed, his name was invoked in the presence of the Lord of spirits. He shall be a prop for the righteous and holy to lean upon without failing; and he shall be the light of the nations.

 4. He shall be the hope of those whose hearts are fearful. All who dwell on earth shall fall down before Him; they shall bless, glorify, and sing prayers to the name of the Lord of spirits.

 5. Therefore, the Elect and Hidden One subsisted in His presence before the world was formed, and forever.

 6. In His presence He existed and revealed to the saints and to the righteous the wisdom of the Lord of spirits; for He hath preserved the lot of the upright, because they have been angry with and rejected this world of iniquity, and have detested all its works and ways in the name of the Lord of spirits.

 7. For in His name they shall be preserved, and theirs shall be the life. In those days the kings of the earth and the mighty men, who have gained the world by their achievements, shall become humble in their countenances.

 8. For in the day of their anxiety and distress their souls shall not be saved, and they shall be in subjection to him whom I have chosen.

 9. I will cast them as stubble into the fire and as lead into the water. Thus shall they burn in the presence of the righteous and sink in the presence of the saints; nor shall the tenth part of them be found.

 10. But in the day of tribulation the world shall gain tranquility.

 11. In his presence they shall fail and shall not be raised up again; neither shall there be anyone to take them by their hands and lift them up; for they have denied the Lord of spirits and his Messiah. The name of the Lord shall be blessed.

### Chapter 48A ^{(45)}

> ^{(45)} Two consecutive chapters are numbered "48" in the manuscript.

 1. Wisdom poured forth like water and glory faileth not before Him forever and ever, for potent is He in all the secrets of righteousness.

 2. But iniquity passeth away like a shadow and possesseth no fixed station, for the Elect One standeth before the Lord of spirits and His glory is forever and ever, and His power from generation to generation.

 3. With Him dwell the spirits of intellectual wisdom, the spirit of instruction and of power, and the spirits of those who sleep in righteousness; He shall judge secret things.

 4. Nobody shall be able to utter a single word before Him, for the Elect One is in the presence of the Lord of spirits according to His own pleasure.

### Chapter 49

 1. In those days the saints and the chosen shall undergo a change. The light of day shall rest upon them, and the splendor and glory of the saints shall be transformed.

 2. In that day of tribulation evil shall be heaped upon sinners, but the righteous shall triumph in the name of the Lord of spirits.

 3. Others shall be led to see that they must repent and forsake the works of their hands, and that glory awaiteth them not in the presence of the Lord of spirits, since by His name they may be saved. The Lord of spirits shall have compassion on them, for great is His mercy and righteousness is in His judgment; in the presence of His glory, in His judgment, iniquity shall not stand. He who repenteth not shall perish in His presence.

 4. "From henceforth I will have no mercy on them," saith the Lord of spirits.

### Chapter 50

 1. In those days the earth shall deliver up from her womb, and hell shall deliver up from itself those whom it received, and destruction shall restore those whom it oweth.

 2. He shall select the righteous and holy from among them, for the day of their salvation hath approached.

 3. And in those days the Elect One shall sit upon his throne, while every secret of intellectual wisdom shall proceed from his mouth, for the Lord of spirits hath granted it unto him and glorified him.

 4. In those days the mountains shall skip like rams, and the hills shall leap like young sheep ^{(46)} satiated with milk; and all the righteous shall become like unto angels in the heavens.

> ^{(46) } Cf. Psalm 114:4.

 5. Their countenance shall be illuminated with joy, for in those days the Elect One shall be exalted. The earth shall rejoice; the righteous shall dwell therein and possess it.

### Chapter 51

 1. After that time, in the place where I had seen every secret vision, I was caught up in a whirlwind and transported toward the west.

 2. There my eyes saw the secrets of heaven and all that exists on earth: a mountain of fire, a mountain of copper, a mountain of silver, a mountain of gold, a mountain of molten metal, and a mountain of lead.

 3. And I asked the angel who went with me, saying: "What are these things which in secret I saw?"

 4. He said: "All the things which thou hast seen shall be for the dominion of the Messiah, that he may command and be powerful upon earth."

 5. And that angel of peace answered me, saying: "Wait a little while and thou shalt understand, and every secret thing shall be revealed unto thee, which the Lord of spirits hath decreed. Those mountains which thou hast seen—the mountain of iron, the mountain of copper, the mountain of silver, the mountain of gold, the mountain of fluid metal, and the mountain of lead—all these in the presence of the Elect One shall be like honeycomb before fire, and like water descending from above upon these mountains, and they shall become weakened before his feet.

 6. In those days men shall not be saved by gold or by silver.

 7. Nor shall they have it in their power to secure themselves and fly.

 8. There shall be neither iron, nor coat of mail for the breast.

 9. Copper shall be useless; useless also shall be that which rusteth not nor consumeth; and lead shall not be desired.

 10. All these things shall be rejected and perish from the earth when the Elect One shall appear in the presence of the Lord of spirits."

### Chapter 52

 1. There my eyes saw a deep valley, and broad was its entrance.

 2. All who dwell on earth, in the sea, and in the islands shall bring to it gifts, presents, and offerings; yet that deep valley shall not be filled. Their hands shall commit iniquity. All that they produce by labor shall be devoured by sinners through crime. But they shall perish from before the face of the Lord of spirits and from the face of his earth. They shall rise up and not fail forever.

 3. I saw angels of punishment, who were dwelling there and preparing all the instruments of Satan.

 4. Then asked I the angel of peace who continued with me for whom those instruments were prepared.

 5. He said: "These are prepared for the kings and powerful ones of the earth, that thereby they may perish.

 6. After the righteous and the chosen house of his congregation shall appear, from thenceforth they shall be unchangeable in the name of the Lord of spirits.

 7. Nor shall those mountains exist in his presence like the earth and the hills, as the fountains of water exist. And the righteous shall be relieved from the vexation of sinners."

### Chapter 53

 1. Then I looked and turned to another part of the earth, where I saw a deep valley of burning fire.

 2. To this valley they brought the monarchs and the powerful.

 3. There my eyes saw the instruments which they made: iron chains without weight. ^{(47)}

> ^{(47)} Without weight. Or, "of immeasurable weight" (Knibb, p. 138).

 4. Then I asked the angel of peace who was with me, saying: "For whom are these chains prepared?"

 5. He answered: "These are prepared for the hosts of Azazeel, that they may be delivered over and judged to a lesser condemnation, and that their angels may be overwhelmed with hurled stones, as the Lord of spirits commanded.

 6. Michael and Gabriel, Raphael and Phanuel shall be strengthened in that day, and then shall cast them into a furnace of burning fire, that the Lord of spirits may be avenged for the crimes they committed; because they became ministers of Satan and seduced those who dwell upon the earth.

 7. In those days punishment shall come from the Lord of spirits, and the receptacles of water which are above in the heavens shall be opened, and likewise the fountains which are under the earth.

 8. All the waters which are in the heavens and beneath them shall be gathered together and shall mix.

 9. The water which is above in the heaven shall be the agent; ^{(48)}

> ^{(48)} Agent. Literally, "male" (Laurence, p. 61).

 10. And the water which is under the earth shall be the recipient, ^{(49)} and all who dwell upon the earth shall be destroyed, and they who dwell under the extremities of heaven.

> ^{(49)} Recipient. Literally, "female" (Laurence, p. 61).

 11. By these means they shall understand the iniquity they committed on earth, and by these means they shall perish."

### Chapter 54

 1. After that the Ancient of Days repented and said: "In vain have I destroyed all the inhabitants of the earth."

 2. And he swore by his great name, saying: "From henceforth I will no longer act thus toward all those who dwell upon the earth.

 3. But I will place a sign in the heavens; ^{(50)} and it shall be a faithful witness between me and them forever, as many as the days of heaven shall endure upon earth.

> ^{(50)} Cf. Genesis 9:13, "I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth."

 4. After that, according to this my decree, when I shall be disposed to bind them beforehand by the instrumentality of the angels in the day of affliction and trouble, my wrath and my punishment shall remain upon them; my punishment and my wrath," saith God, the Lord of spirits.

 5. "O ye kings, O ye powerful ones who dwell in the world, ye shall see My Elect One sitting upon the throne of My glory. And He shall judge Azazeel and all his associates in the name of the Lord of spirits."

 6. There likewise I saw the hosts of the angels who were moving in punishment, confined in a net of iron and brass. Then I asked the angel of peace who was with me: "For whom are these under confinement going?"

 7. He said: "To each of their elect and their beloved ones, ^{(51)} that they may be cast into the fountains and deep chasms of the abyss.

> ^{(51)} To each of their… beloved ones. Or, "To each of their chosen and to their beloved ones" (Knibb, p. 139).

 8. And that valley shall be filled with their elect and beloved; the days of their life shall be consummated, but the days of their errors shall be innumerable.

 9. Then princes ^{(52)} shall combine and together conspire. The chiefs of the east, among the Parthians and Medes, shall remove kings into whom a spirit of trouble shall enter. He shall cast them from their thrones, leaping like lions from their hiding places and like hungry wolves in the midst of the flock.

> ^{(52)} Princes. Or, "angels" (Charles, p. 149; Knibb, p. 140).

 10. They shall go up and tread upon the land of their elect. The land of their elect shall be before them. The threshing-floor, the path, and the city of My righteous people shall impede the progress of their horses. They shall rise up to destroy one another; their right hand shall be stretched forth; a man shall not know his friend or his brother;

 11. Nor the son of his father or of his mother; until the number of the bodies of their dead be completed by their death and punishment. Nor shall this happen without cause.

 12. In those days the mouth of hell shall be opened, wherein they shall be immersed; hell shall destroy and swallow up sinners from the face of the elect."

### Chapter 55

 1. After this I saw another army of chariots with men driving them.

 2. And they came upon the wind of the east, from the west and from the south. ^{(53)}

> ^{(53) } From the south. Literally "from the midst of the day" (Laurence, p. 63).

 3. The sound of the noise of their chariots was heard.

 4. And when that agitation took place, the saints outside of heaven perceived it; the pillar of the earth shook from its foundation and the sound was heard from the extremities of the earth to the extremities of heaven at the same time.

 5. Then they fell down and worshiped the Lord of spirits.

 6. This is the end of the second parable.

### Chapter 56

 1. Then I began to utter the third parable, concerning the saints and the elect.

 2. Blessed are ye, O saints and elect, for glorious is your place.

 3. The saints shall exist in the light of the sun and the elect in the light of eternal life, whose days of life shall never end, nor shall the days of the saints be numbered, who seek for light and obtain righteousness with the Lord of spirits.

 4. Peace be to the saints with the Lord of the world.

 5. From henceforth, let it be said to the saints that they should seek in heaven the secrets of righteousness, the portion of faith; like unto the sun risen upon earth while darkness departeth. There shall be endless light; they shall not enter into computation of time, for darkness shall be previously destroyed and light shall increase before the Lord of spirits; before the Lord of spirits the light of uprightness shall increase forever.

### Chapter 57

 1. In those days my eyes saw the secrets of lightnings and their splendor, and the judgment belonging unto them.

 2. They illuminate for blessing and for curse, according to the will of the Lord of spirits.

 3. There I saw the secrets of thunder when it agitateth itself above in heaven and its sound is heard.

 4. The habitations of the earth also were shown to me. The sound of thunder is for peace and for blessing, both for good and for curse, according to the word of the Lord of spirits.

 5. After that, every secret of splendors and of thunders was seen by me. For blessing and for fertility they illuminate.

### Chapter 58

 1. In the fiftieth year, in the seventh month, on the fourteenth day of the life of Enoch, in that parable I saw the heaven of heavens shake; that it shook violently, and that the powers of the Most High and of the angels, thousands of thousands and myriads of myriads, were agitated with great agitation. And when I looked, the Ancient of Days was sitting on the throne of his glory, while the angels and saints stood round about him. A great trembling came upon me. My loins were bowed and loosed, my kidneys were dissolved; and I fell upon my face. The holy Michael, another holy angel, one of the holy ones, was sent, who raised me up.

 2. And when he raised me up, my spirit returned, for I was unable to endure this vision of violence, its agitation, and the shock of heaven.

 3. Then the holy Michael said unto me: "Why art thou troubled with this vision?

 4. Hitherto hath existed the day of mercy; He hath been merciful and long-suffering with all who dwell upon the earth.

 5. But when the time cometh, then power, punishment, and judgment shall take place, which the Lord of spirits hath prepared for those who bow down to the judgment of righteousness, for those who renounce that judgment, and for those who take His name in vain.

 6. That day hath been prepared for the elect as a day of covenant and for sinners as a day of inquisition.

 7. In that day two monsters shall be distributed as food, ^{(54)} a female monster, whose name is Leviathan, dwelling in the depths of the sea, above the fountains of waters;

> ^{(54)} Distributed as food. Or, "separated from one another" (Knibb, p. 143).

 8. And a male monster, whose name is Behemoth, who possesseth, moving in his belly, the invisible wilderness.

 9. His name was Dendayen. To the east of the garden where the elect and the righteous shall dwell, where he received it from my ancestor, from Adam, the first of men, ^{(55)} which man the Lord of spirits made.

> ^{(55)} He received it… first of men. Or, "my great-grandfather was taken, the seventh from Adam" (Charles, p. 155). This implies that this section of the book was written by Noah, a descendant of Enoch. Scholars have speculated that this part of the book may contain fragments of the lost Apocalypse of Noah.

 10. Then I asked another angel to show me the power of those monsters, how they separated in that same day, one being in the depths of the sea and the other in the dry desert.

 11. And he said: "Thou, son of man, art here desirous of understanding secret things."

 12. And the angel of peace, who was with me, said: "These two monsters are prepared by the power of God to become food, that the punishment of God may not be in vain.

 13. Then children shall be slain with their mothers, and sons with their fathers.

 14. And when the punishment of the Lord of spirits shall continue, upon them it shall continue, that the punishment of the Lord of spirits may not take place in vain. After which, judgment shall exist with mercy and long-suffering."

### Chapter 59

 1. Then another angel, who was with me, spake to me,

 2. And showed me the first and the last of secrets high up in heaven, and in the depths of the earth:

 3. In the extremities of heaven and in the foundations thereof, and in the receptacle of the heavens.

 4. He showed me how their spirits were divided; how they were weighed, and how both fountains and winds were counted according to the strength of their spirit.

 5. He showed me the power of the light of the moon, that its power is just; as well as the divisions of the stars, according to their respective names;

 6. That each division is separated; that lightnings illuminate;

 7. That their troops immediately obey, and that a cessation takes place during thunder in continuation of its sound. They are not separated, the thunder and the lightning; nor do they move with a single spirit, since they are not divided.

 8. For when lightnings illuminate, thunder soundeth, and the spirit, at its proper period, maketh a pause, making an equal division between them, for the receptacle whereupon their periods depend is loose as sand. Each of them, at its own season, is restrained with a rein and turned by the power of the spirit, which thus impelleth them according to the spacious extent of the earth.

 9. The spirit of the sea is likewise potent and strong, and a power so strong maketh it ebb; thus it is directed forward and scattereth itself against the mountains of the earth. The spirit of frost hath its angel; in the spirit of hail it is a good angel; the spirit of snow ceaseth in its strength, and a solitary spirit is in it, which ascendeth from it like vapor and is called refrigeration.

 10. The spirit of mist also dwelleth with them in their receptacle, but it hath a receptacle for itself, for its progress is in splendor,

 11. In light and in darkness, in winter and in summer. Its receptacle is brightness, and an angel is in it.

 12. The spirit of dew hath its domicile at the extremities of heaven, in connection with the receptacle of rain, and its progress is in winter and in summer. The cloud produced by it and the cloud of the middle become united, one giveth to another; and when the spirit of rain is in motion from its receptacle, angels come and, opening its receptacle, bring it forth.

 13. When likewise it is sprinkled upon all the earth, it formeth a union with every kind of water on the ground; for waters stay on the earth because they furnish nutrition to the earth from the Most High, who is in heaven.

 14. Upon this report, therefore, there is a regulation in the quality of rain which the angels receive.

 15. These things I saw, all of them, even unto paradise.

### Chapter 60

 1. In those days I saw that long ropes were given to those angels, who took their wings and fled toward the north.

 2. I asked the angel, saying: "Whither have they taken those long ropes, and whither are they gone?" He said: "They are gone to measure."

 3. The angel who continued with me said: "These are the measures of the righteous, and cords shall be brought that they may trust in the name of the Lord of spirits forever and ever.

 4. The elect shall begin to dwell with the elect.

 5. These are the measures that shall be given by faith, which shall strengthen the words of righteousness.

 6. These measures shall reveal all secrets in the depths of the earth.

 7. And it shall come to pass that those who were destroyed in the wilderness and those who were devoured by the fish of the sea and by the beasts of the field shall return and trust in the day of the Elect One, for none shall perish in the presence of the Lord of spirits, nor shall anyone be able to perish.

 8. Then they received the commandment, all who were in the heavens above, to whom was given a combined power, voice, and splendor like unto fire.

 9. And first, with their voices they blessed him, exalted him, glorified him with wisdom, and attributed to Him wisdom with the word and with the breath of life.

 10. Then the Lord of spirits, sitting upon the throne of his glory, the Elect One,

 11. Who shall judge all the works of the Holy One above in heaven, and in a balance He shall weigh their actions. And when He shall lift up His countenance to judge their secret ways in the word of the name of the Lord of spirits, and their progress in the path of the righteous judgment of the Most High God;

 12. They shall speak with united voices; they shall bless, glorify, exalt, and pray in the name of the Lord of spirits.

 13. He shall call to every power of the heavens, to every holy one above, and to the power of God. The Cherubim, the Seraphim, the Ophanim, all angels of power, and all angels of the Lords, namely, of the Elect One and of the other Power, which was upon the water in that day.

 14. And they shall raise their united voices; they shall bless, glorify, pray, and exalt with the spirit of faith, with the spirit of wisdom and patience, with the spirit of mercy, with the spirit of judgment and peace, and with the spirit of benevolence; all shall say with united voices: 'Blessed is He; and the name of the Lord of spirits shall be blessed forever and ever; all who sleep not shall bless Him above in heaven.'

 15. Every holy one in heaven shall bless him; every elect one who dwelleth in the garden of life, and every spirit of light that is able to bless, glorify, exalt, and pray in his holy name, and every mortal man ^{(56)} more than the powers of heaven shall glorify and bless his name forever and ever.

> ^{(56)} Every mortal man. Literally, "all flesh" (Laurence, p. 73).

 16. For great is the mercy of the Lord of spirits; long-suffering He is; and all His works, all His power, great as are the things He hath done, He hath revealed to the saints and elect in the name of the Lord of spirits."

### Chapter 61

 1. Then the Lord commanded the kings, the princes, the exalted ones, and those who dwell upon the earth, saying: "Open your eyes and lift up your horns if ye are able to comprehend the Elect One."

 2. The Lord of spirits sat upon the throne of his glory.

 3. And the spirit of righteousness was placed upon him.

 4. The word of his mouth shall destroy all sinners and all the ungodly, who shall perish in his presence.

 5. In that day all the kings, the princes, the exalted ones, and all who possess the earth shall stand up, they shall see and perceive Him who is sitting on the throne of his glory, that before Him the saints shall be judged in righteousness,

 6. And that nothing of what shall be spoken before Him shall be spoken in vain.

 7. Anxiety shall come upon them as upon a woman in travail, whose labor is severe when her child cometh to the mouth of the womb and she findeth herself in difficulty of giving birth.

 8. A portion of them shall look at another. They shall be astonished and lower their countenance,

 9. And affliction shall seize them when they see the Son of the woman sitting upon his throne of glory.

 10. Then the kings, the princes, and all who possess the earth shall glorify Him who hath dominion over all things, Him who was in counsel; for from the beginning the Son of Man existed in secret, whom the Most High preserved in the presence of His power and was revealed to the elect.

 11. He shall sow the congregation of the saints and of the elect, and every elect one shall stand before Him in that day.

 12. All the kings, princes, the exalted ones, and those who rule over all the earth shall fall upon their faces before Him and worship Him.

 13. They shall place their hopes in this Son of Man, pray to Him, and implore for mercy.

 14. Then the Lord of spirits shall hasten to expel them from His presence. Their faces shall be filled with confusion and covered with darkness. The angels shall take them for punishment, that vengeance may be inflicted on those who have oppressed His children and His elect. And they shall become as an example to the saints and to His elect. Through them these shall be made joyful, for the wrath of the Lord of spirits shall rest upon them.

 15. Then the sword of the Lord of spirits shall be drunken with their blood, but the saints and elect shall be saved in that day; the face of sinners and of the ungodly from that time forward they shall not see.

 16. The Lord of spirits shall remain over them;

 17. And with this Son of Man they shall dwell, eat, lie down, and rise up forever and ever.

 18. The saints and elect have risen from the earth. They have ceased to depress their countenances and shall have been clothed with the garment of life. Those garments of life are with the Lord of spirits, in whose presence their garments shall not grow old, nor shall their glory be diminished.

### Chapter 62

 1. In those days the kings who possessed the earth shall be punished by the angels of His wrath wheresoever they are delivered unto them, that He may give rest for a short period of time; and that they may prostrate themselves before Him and worship the Lord of spirits, confessing their sins before Him.

 2. They shall bless and glorify the Lord of spirits, saying: "Blessed is the Lord of spirits, the Lord of kings, the Lord of spirits, the Lord of the rich, the Lord of glory, and the Lord of wisdom.

 3. He shall illuminate every secret thing.

 4. His power is from generation to generation and His glory forever and ever.

 5. Deep are all His secrets and countless; his righteousness cannot be calculated.

 6. Now we know that we ought to glorify and bless the Lord of kings, who is King over all things."

 7. They shall also say: "Who hath permitted us to stand to glorify, praise, bless, and confess in the presence of His glory?

 8. And now small is the rest which we desire, but we find it not; we reject it and possess it not. Light hath passed before us and darkness hath covered our thrones forever.

 9. For we confessed not before Him; we have not glorified the name of the Lord of kings; we have not glorified the Lord in all His works, but have trusted in the sceptre of our own dominion and of our glory.

 10. In that day of our suffering and our anxiety He shall not save us, nor shall we find rest. We confess that our Lord is faithful in all His works, in all His judgments, and in His righteousness.

 11. In His judgments He payeth no respect to persons; and we must depart from His presence because of our evil deeds.

 12. All our sins are truly without number."

 13. Then they shall say to themselves: "Our souls are satiated with the instruments of crime;

 14. But that preventeth us not from descending into the flaming belly of hell."

 15. From thenceforth their countenances shall be filled with darkness and confusion before the Son of Man, from whose presence they shall be expelled and before whom the sword shall remain expelling them.

 16. Thus saith the Lord of spirits: "This is the decree and the judgment against the princes, the kings, the exalted ones, and those who possess the earth in the presence of the Lord of spirits."

### Chapter 63

 1. I saw other countenances in that secret place. I heard the voice of an angel saying: "These are the angels who descended from heaven to earth, revealed secrets to the sons of men, and seduced the sons of men to commit sin."

### Chapter 64 ^{(57)}

> ^{(57)} Chapters 64, 65, 66 and the first verse of 67 evidently contain the version of Noah and not of Enoch (Laurence, p. 78).

 1. In those days Noah saw that the earth inclined and that destruction approached.

 2. Then he lifted up his feet and went to the ends of the earth, to the dwelling place of his great-grandfather Enoch.

 3. And Noah cried out with a bitter voice: "Hear me, hear me, hear me," three times. And he said: "Tell me what is occurring upon the earth, for the earth travaileth and is violently shaken. Surely I shall perish with it."

 4. After that there was a great trouble on the earth and a voice was heard from heaven. I fell upon my face; then my great-grandfather Enoch came and stood by my side.

 5. He said unto me: "Why criest thou unto me with a bitter cry and lamentation?

 6. A commandment hath gone forth from the Lord against those who dwell on the earth that they should be destroyed, for they know every secret of the angels, every oppressive work, the secret power of the demons ^{(58)} and all the power of those who commit sorceries, as well as of those who make molten images throughout all the earth.

> ^{(58) } The demons. Literally, "the Satans" (Laurence, p. 78).

 7. They know how silver is produced from the dust of the earth and how on the earth the metal drop exists, for lead and tin are not produced from the earth as the primary source of their production.

 8. There is an angel placed over it, and the angel struggleth to prevail."

 9. After that my great-grandfather Enoch seized me with his hand, raising me up, and said unto me: "Go, for I have asked the Lord of spirits respecting this trouble of the earth; who answered: 'By reason of their impiety their innumerable judgments have been consummated before me. With respect to the moons they have inquired, and have knowledge that the earth shall perish with those who dwell upon it, ^{(59)} and that these shall have no place of refuge forever.'

> ^{(59)} With respect to the moons… dwell upon it. Or, "Because of the sorceries which they have searched out and learned, the earth and those who dwell upon it shall be destroyed" (Knibb, p. 155).

 10. They have discovered secrets, and they are those who have been judged; but not you, my son. The Lord of spirits knoweth that thou art pure and good, free from the reproof of the discovery of secrets.

 11. He, the Holy One, shall establish His name in the midst of the saints and shall preserve thee from those who dwell upon the earth. He shall establish thy seed in righteousness with dominion and great glory, ^{(60)} and from thy seed shall spread righteousness and holy men without number, forever."

> ^{(60)} With dominion… glory. Literally, "for kings, and for great glory" (Laurence, p. 79).

### Chapter 65

 1. After that he showed me the angels of punishment, who are prepared to come and open all the mighty waters under the earth:

 2. That they may be for judgment and for destruction of all those who remain and dwell upon the earth.

 3. The Lord of spirits commanded the angels who went forth not to take men, and to preserve them,

 4. For those angels preside over all the mighty waters. Then I went out from the presence of Enoch.

### Chapter 66

 1. In those days the word of God came unto me and said: "Behold, Noah, thy lot hath ascended to Me: a lot immune from crime, a lot beloved and superior.

 2. Now, therefore, the angels shall work the trees, ^{(61)} but while they proceed in this I will place my hand upon them and preserve them.

> ^{(61)} Work the trees. Or, "are making a (structure of) wood" (Knibb, p. 156).

 3. The seed of life shall rise from it, and a change shall take place so that the dry ground be not left empty. I will establish thy seed before me forever and ever, and the seed of those who shall dwell with thee on the surface of the earth. It shall be blessed and multiplied in the presence of the earth, in the name of the Lord.

 4. They shall confine those angels who discovered impiety. In that burning valley is where they shall be confined, which at first my great-grandfather showed me in the west, where there are mountains of gold and silver, of iron, of fluid metal, and of tin."

 5. I saw that valley in which there is a great trouble and where the waters are agitated.

 6. And when all this was executed, from the fluid mass of fire and in the trouble that prevailed ^{(62)} in that place arose a strong smell of sulfur which mixed with the waters; and the valley of the angels who had been guilty of seduction burned beneath the earth.

> ^{(62) } The trouble that prevailed. Literally, "troubled them" (Laurence, p. 81).

 7. Through that valley rivers of fire also were flowing, to which those angels shall be condemned, who seduced the inhabitants of the earth.

 8. And in those days these waters shall be for the kings, for the princes, for the exalted ones, and for the inhabitants of the earth, for the healing of soul and body and for the judgment of the spirit.

 9. Their spirits shall be full of feasting ^{(63)} that they may be judged in their bodies; because they denied the Lord of spirits and, although they perceived their condemnation day by day, they believed not in His name.

> ^{(63)} Feasting. Or, "lust" (Knibb, p. 157).

 10. And as the inflammation of their bodies shall be great, so their spirits shall undergo a transformation forever.

 11. For no word that is spoken before the Lord of spirits shall be in vain.

 12. Judgment came upon them because they trusted in their carnal lust and denied the Lord of spirits.

 13. In those days the waters of that valley shall be changed, for, while the angels are judged, the heat of those springs of water shall undergo an alteration.

 14. And while the angels ascend, the water of the springs again shall undergo an alteration and freeze. Then heard I the holy Michael answering and saying: "This judgment wherewith the angels shall be judged shall bear witness against the kings, princes, and those who possess the earth.

 15. For these waters of judgment shall be for their healing and for the death ^{(64)} of their bodies. But they shall not perceive and shall not believe that the waters shall be changed and made like fire that shall burn forever."

> ^{(64)} Death. Or, "lust" (Charles, p. 176; Knibb, p. 158).

### Chapter 67

 1. After this he gave me the characteristic marks ^{(65)} of all the secret things from the book of my great-grandfather Enoch, and in the parables which had been given to him; inserting them for me among the words of the book of parables.

> ^{(65)} Characteristic marks. Literally, "the signs" (Laurence, p. 83).

 2. At that moment the holy Michael answered and said to Raphael: "The power of the spirit precipitateth me from hence and impelleth me out. The severity of the judgment, of the secret judgment of the angels, who is able to observe—the endurance of that severe judgment which took place and became permanent—without being dissolved in his place?" Again the holy Michael answered and said to the holy Raphael: "Who is there whose heart is not softened by this, and whose kidneys are not troubled with this thing?

 3. Judgment went out against them by those who thus dragged them out; and who went away when they were in the presence of the Lord of spirits."

 4. In like manner also the holy Rakael said to Raphael: "They shall not stand before the eye of the Lord ^{(66)} since the Lord of spirits was offended by them, for as Lords ^{(67)} they have conducted themselves. Therefore, He bringeth upon them a secret judgment forever and ever.

> ^{(66)} They shall not... eye of the Lord. Or, "I will not take part under the eye of the Lord" (Knibb, p. 159).

> ^{(67)} For as Lords. Or, "for they acted as if they were the Lord" (Knibb, p. 159).

 5. For neither angel nor man receiveth a portion of it, but they alone shall receive their own judgment forever and ever."

### Chapter 68

 1. After this judgment they shall be astonished and irritated, for they shall be exhibited to the inhabitants of the earth.

 2. Behold the names of these angels. These are their names: The first of them is Samyaza; the second is Arstikapha; the third is Armen; the fourth, Kakabael; the fifth, Turel; the sixth, Rumyel; the seventh, Danyal; the eighth, Kael; the ninth, Barakel; the tenth, Azazel; the eleventh, Armers; the twelfth, Bataryal; the thirteenth, Basasael; the fourteenth, Ananel; the fifteenth, Turyal; the sixteenth, Simapiseel; the seventeenth, Yetarel; the eighteenth, Tumael; the nineteenth, Tarel; the twentieth, Rumel; the twenty-first, Azazyel.

 3. These are the chiefs of the angels, and the names of the leaders of their hundreds, and their leaders of fifty, and the leaders of their tens.

 4. The name of the first is Yekun: ^{(68)} he was the one who seduced all the children of the holy angels and caused them to descend to earth, leading astray the offspring of men.

> ^{(68)} Yekun may simply mean "the rebel" (Knibb, p. 160).

 5. The name of the second is Kesabel, who pointed out evil counsel to the children of the holy angels and led them to corrupt their bodies by begetting humans.

 6. The name of the third is Gadrel: he discovered every stroke of death to the children of men.

 7. He seduced Eve and discovered to the children of men the instruments of death: the coat of mail, the shield, and the sword for slaughter; every instrument of death for the children of men.

 8. These things derived from his hands to those who dwell upon the earth from that period forever.

 9. The name of the fourth is Penemue: he discovered to the children of men bitterness and sweetness,

 10. And showed unto them every secret of his wisdom.

 11. He taught men to understand writing and the use of ink and paper.

 12. Therefore, numerous have been those who have gone astray in every period of the world, even unto this day.

 13. Men were not born for this—to confirm their faith thus with pen and ink;

 14. Since then they were not created except that, like the angels, they might remain upright and pure.

 15. Nor could death, which destroyeth all, have affected them;

 16. But by this their knowledge they perish, and by this also their power consumeth them.

 17. The name of the fifth is Kasyade: he discovered to the children of men every wicked stroke of spirits and of demons:

 18. The stroke of the embryo in the womb, to diminish it; ^{(69)} the stroke of the spirit by the bite of the serpent, and the stroke that is given at noon by the son of the serpent, whose name is Tabaet. ^{(70)}

> ^{(69) } The stroke… to diminish it. Or, "the punch (with attack, assault) to the embryo in the womb so that it be aborted."
